applying the rubric

This peer review activity applies the language of the rubric to essay 1, allowing you to review the essay independently then confer with writing colleagues to arrive at an overall evaluation for two essays. I will distribute one rubric per essay.

Before you leave your seat, open your essay and save a copy to the desktop using the following steps:

  • Make a copy of the draft you came in to class with today.
  • Change name of copy to "essay1_peerreview2"
  • Close other windows on your computer, leaving on this draft open.

Follow the steps below to complete this peer review activity:

  • Read through the rubric.
  • Read through the essay once in its entirety without making changes or comments.
  • Using the "comment" and "suggesting mode" features in the Google Docs, interact with the document, making at least two comments per paragraph. Feel free to also make comments on grammar and style issues, remembering to be both thorough and constructive.
  • Switch seats with someone sitting next to you and make minor comments as necessary.
  • Discuss with your peer the two papers you have read, coming to a consensus on how you would grade them by applying the standards of the rubric.
  • Mark and comment on the rubric to reflect this consensus.
  • On the back of the rubric, write two positive comments (what the author has done well) and two "needs improvement" comments. Remember in both of these to craft your language carefully. The point here is not to belittle your peer but to guide him or her in the revision of the essay for the final draft.
  • Put your name and the date on the top of the two rubrics you collaborated on.
  • Return to your seat.
